It is a free mobile game so that will probably scare a few people away but spending money does not give any direct power-ups, the only thing that comes close to p2w is that it makes handling large armies a little bit easier because it allows you to queue more commands. I want to add Subterfuge to the list of games that fit your description pretty well. However, since the game saves after each turn, you never really lose any progress. The only real issue with it I have is performance: It's very RAM-hungry and tends to run slow and unstable during longer matches on large maps, even on powerful devices. It's singleplayer and local multiplayer only. Nice low-poly look, excellent balancing, extremely addicting gameplay. There's a large tech tree and outstanding procedurally generated maps, with each feeling absolutely unique. Each tribe has one technology unlocked from your start (which influences your early game strategy) and different looking units and music, as well as different starting biomes, but all tribes are identical apart from that, except for the Aquarions, which have a few unique units (and cost money). There are two modes: One with a turn limit and one without. The base game is free (and will keep you busy for days at the very least), but you can purchase more tribes, with each additional tribe unlocking a larger map size with more enemy tribes. I've been playing it for more than a year now, almost every day. The Battle of Polytopia: It's Civilization condensed down to its absolute minimum, but there is still a remarkable amount of depth hidden beneath a layer of minimalism and purposeful simplicity. There is no other game I've played this much over the course of several decades of gaming. What surprised me the most about this game is for how long I've been playing it: Several years now, almost every day for a few minutes, which is quite remarkable.

As soon as you have purchased one tribe, online multiplayer gets unlocked, but offline multiplayer (labeled 'Pass & Play' in the game), the kind you are looking for, is free for everyone. There are no other microtransactions - you pay for each new tribe (with different starting tech and art, but there are also special tribes that play radically different) and the more tribes you have purchased, the larger maps can be (and larger maps can house more players, of course). The base game is free, larger maps and more tribes cost money. Polytopia has a very clear UI, an easy to learn, hard to master gameplay loop, pleasant art, a remarkably well thought out tech tree and some of the best random map generation I've ever seen. It's turn-based strategy compressed down to the absolute minimum, yet it's insanely polished, enjoyable and addictive. Coworkers were sinking hundreds a month to 'keep up'. Pokemon Go is my only real F2P app, but that's more something to do while walking to places.Įdit: I've played the most popular 'Clash of' titles, and those are just obvious 'cash to compete' titles, so I bounced out quickly. Summoners War is the only game that I've played and not felt completely overrun with special packs, but that, too, got bad after a year of play and hitting a grind wall. It's great trade off and I've spent loads of hours playing it. Each additional faction not only adds variety but you can increase the number of total factions on the map. I'm okay with free and paying to remove ads, but designing a game with obvious grind or RNG mechanics, with paid bypasses (or worse, just chances to bypass) are things that are terrible for all parties except those aiming to profit. I think that matters if there's a cost of entry for the title.
